Jean Giraud (Moebius) was a highly influential French sci-fi and fantasy artist who died only last year (2012). He illustrated countless speculative fiction magazines over the course of his life, worked with other greats such as HR Giger and Ron Cobb on film projects like Dune and Alien, and directly inspired much of the genre-defining work of Ralph McQuarrie (the guy who basically designed the entire Star Wars universe for George Lucas), who also sadly passed away last year. Both McQuarrie and Giraud were giants of science fiction, and they will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.
